Retired nurses to host a high tea for Human Rights Day, promoting health and community empowerment

The Nigel Retired Nurses, established in April 2025, will celebrate Human Rights Day in style on March 21 at the Duduza Resource Centre.
The organisation will host a high tea with the theme ‘smart or elegant with a hat’.
The day will feature social workers, a motivational speaker, a medical doctor, and speakers from the Democratic Nurses Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA).
Various invited speakers will address topics such as health education and, most importantly, the promotion of each individual’s rights in the health sector.
Through this initiative, the Nigel Retired Nurses aim to equip community members with practical knowledge on hygiene and skills that support overall well-being.

Therefore, the Nigel Retired Nurses invited residents of Nigel and the surrounding areas to the event.
“Our mission is to develop the community by offering skills and knowledge.
“At the event we will explain our mission, which is to make retired nurses aware of their rights, what they can still do, and the benefits they are still entitled to.
“Many retired nurses believe that there is nothing more they can do to plough back into the communities we live in, which is not true.

“We aim to educate retired nurses and the community about their rights,” said organisation secretary Flo Tlagae.

She added the group’s long-term goal is to open a school that will equip young people with the skills to become caregivers or nurses.
“Our goal is to also provide mentorship, opportunities – job- or skills-related to individuals who are willing to learn,” she said.
Nigel Retired Nurses wants to partner with different stakeholders, individuals, and businesses to make their vision a reality.
