Operation Shanela targets crime hotspots in Tsakani: Dozens arrested and illegal taxis impounded

Tsakani — Acting Ekurhuleni District commissioner Brigadier David Ngcobo led senior SAPS management and other law enforcement agencies in a multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela on Thursday morning.
A roadblock was set up near Duduza Rank, along Black Road. By 10:00, 42 undocumented individuals had been arrested.
“We have managed to impound 18 taxis for operating without permits. We also arrested three suspects for dealing in dagga, and another for possession of drugs (nyaope),” explained Ngcobo.
He added that four shebeens were raided and shut down.
“We are targeting Tsakani because it is one of the police precincts with high rates of trio crimes—carjackings, house robberies, and business robberies. At times, we have also experienced taxi violence in this area,” he said.
During the roadblock, vehicles were stopped and searched. Some taxi commuters expressed surprise at being searched by the officers. Authorities were also on the lookout for wanted suspects.
The operation is part of a broader effort to reinforce state authority and assist the local police station in reducing crime in the area.
