Kwa-Thema- Seventeen-year-old Thandiwe Masilela from Marikana Ext 3 has made her community proud after achieving distinctions in mathematics, physical sciences, life orientation, life sciences, geography, isiZulu home language and English first additional language.“It’s not what I expected, but I feel proud of myself,” said Masilela.The Zimisele Secondary School former learner credits her success to discipline and consistency, saying she attended extra classes regularly and studied late into the night at home.“I studied under a lot of pressure. The bar was set very high and people expected a lot from me, but I kept pushing,” she said.

Masilela will be heading to the University of the Witwatersrand, where she plans to pursue a medical degree.Her long-term goal is to become a doctor and improve her family’s circumstances.She hopes to secure admission at Wits and transition successfully into higher education.She encouraged fellow learners to remain focused despite challenges.“Keep pushing even when it gets hard. Give it your all because it is possible. And when things become tough, reach out to your teachers,” she said.
