A future soccer star in the making, Quinton Munro, dreams to play for Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs some day. The 12-year-old plays for the Springs Premier FC’s U12 L5 team under coach Chosen Eddie and team manager Janine Venter.
He told the Springs Advertiser that he started playing the sport after watching his friends play for a local team, Inter Milan, under coach Chester in Duduza, where Munro was born.
“The coach later invited me to play for the team as well,” he said.
Although he enjoyed playing there, it became difficult to travel for training after he moved to Welgedacht to stay with his uncle and aunt.
“My uncle advised me to go play for a local side, and I was warmly received by the players and coaches,” said Munro.
Despite his age, Munro already dreams of playing alongside his football hero, Mfundo Vilakazi, who plays for Kaizer Chiefs.Asked why he loves Vilakazi, he had the following to say: “I love his tactics and how he dictates the play.”
Munro also hopes to play abroad. “If I were to play abroad, I would like to play for Real Madrid because I am a fan of Kylian Mbappé,” he said.
Although football is his first love, Munro said he also enjoys school. He once wanted to become a doctor but changed his mind when he discovered how many years it would take.
“When my family told me that it would take seven years to become a doctor, I knew that was too long for me, so I switched to engineering,” he said.
Munro said that if things don’t work out academically, he will pursue football as his professional option until retirement.
“When I am not at school or playing soccer with my friends, I am keeping busy practicing my skills,” he said.
Venter praised the youngster’s commitment and versatility.
“We’ve used him in other positions because he’s such a versatile player. He can play almost anywhere, even as a goalkeeper,” she said.
