Nurse shares simple hangover remedies for the festive season

As the festive spirit is in the air, many people go out and celebrate more often, and with the higher intake of alcohol comes one unwelcome companion: the hangover. Nurse Nomvula Mtshali from Epilepsy SA said most hangover symptoms come down to dehydration, low blood sugar and a strained digestive system.
While there is no instant cure, she explained that a few simple habits can help the body bounce back. Mtshali said people often look for quick fixes, but the best remedies focus on supporting the body rather than masking the symptoms.
She added that anyone who experiences severe vomiting, confusion or signs of alcohol poisoning should seek medical care immediately.
Here are her recommended recovery tips:
• Hydrate steadilySip water or an electrolyte drink throughout the morning. Mtshali said this replaces lost fluids and helps ease headaches and a dry mouth.
• Eat a gentle, balanced mealA light breakfast with fruit, toast or oats helps stabilise blood sugar. She said bananas are especially helpful because they replenish potassium.
• Rest as much as possibleSleep is one of the most effective ways to recover. According to Mtshali, the body needs time to break down the alcohol still in the system.
• Avoid more alcoholShe warned that drinking again the next morning only delays the symptoms and can worsen dehydration.
Mtshali said the best long-term strategy remains moderation, eating before drinking and pairing each alcoholic drink with water.
