Coach hails 14-year-old as a soccer phenom beyond his years

Tsakani – Itumeleng Maseko (14) is a passionate soccer player who began playing at age seven under coach Obakeng Mapotela’s guidance.
Currently, he plays for the Tjovitjo Sporting Club. Maseko is a versatile player who can play all positions but mostly dominates as a striker and midfielder.
His coach describes him as a quality player who always dedicates himself to soccer and each game he plays.
Mapotela stated that Maseko is a skilful player who has never played for his actual age division.
“He has always played for the U13, and now at the age of 14, he plays for the U17 team. It has always been clear that Maseko is not an ordinary football player.

“His natural talent, discipline, and understanding of the game set him apart from his peers. While other children were still learning the basics, he was already showing signs of greatness,” explained Mapotela.
Mapotela says that between the ages of eight and 10, Maseko’s consistency became even more evident.
The coach also mentioned that he has never seen Maseko treat soccer as just a hobby – season after season, he remains focused and committed.
“What makes him stand out even more is his work ethic.
“Always available for training, ready to give the best for the team, and willing to improve, Maseko impresses with confidence, physical strength, and intelligence beyond his age,” he added.

“Whether leading from his position on the field or inspiring teammates through his determination, he has shown that he deserves recognition.”

Mapotela added that he admires Maseko’s balance between school and the sport he plays.
“Despite the challenges young athletes often face, including balancing education and sport, he remains focused.
“Understanding the importance of both football and studies, Maseko works hard to succeed in both areas. More than just a player, he serves as an inspiration to his community,” highlighted Mapotela.
Maseko cited that soccer is not just a sport he is passionate about, it is part of who he is.
“My dedication since childhood has proved that my talent is not temporary, but something special. Soccer has managed to shape me into the person that I am today and has kept me away from bad habits,” he said.

He further stated that his coach has always looked beyond his age and height and has never judged him for being shorter than other players.
“My height has never been a factor anywhere because I know how to play well.
“I look up to Lionel Messi for inspiration. He is an international player who is short but has achieved great things in the sporting industry,” he said.
Apart from being a soccer player, Maseko aspires to become a pilot, earn scholarships through soccer, and improve his family’s situation at home.

“I get so much support at home, and that alone is inspiring. All I want is to work hard, make my mother and the rest of my family very happy.

“Becoming a pilot will help me change everything; it will also help me make a name for myself within the township,” he said.
Maseko also explained that he would love to advance and end up playing soccer, signed under a recognised club.
He also explained that he would love to advance in soccer and eventually play for a recognised club, adding that balancing both his studies and sports ambitions is challenging but motivating.
