From casual runners to community leaders: Elevate As One Run grows across townships

Tsakani – Gabriel Skosana (25) and Gontse Moeketsi (23) founded a running group called Elevate As One (EAO) Run to promote fitness within the township.
In early May, they hosted the first EAO Run, drawing 15 runners. The number of participants has steadily grown, now with over 150 members in their WhatsApp community.
The club hosted its first activation run at Dapper District, a grooming and lifestyle spot in KwaThema on May 31. It was a celebration of movement, music, and community collaboration.
“EAO Run is more than just a group of runners. It is a movement, a statement, a heartbeat of unity and wellness pounding to the rhythm of change.

“The group is not only about fitness. It is a platform for township youth to take up space, show pride, and drive awareness for causes close to their hearts,” said Skosana.

The idea of the club started as a casual training routine between Skosana and Moeketsi in preparation for the 2025 Colgate Road Race, which takes place each year in May.
The club has wonderfully transformed into one of the most exciting, township-based running groups. They run every Saturday from 07:00 and participation is free. The club has different routes to accommodate beginners and seasoned runners.
“We have the 3km, 5km and 8km routes. We aim to introduce a 10km route as well. We have been receiving incredible support from community members and friends.
“Our friend Sibusiso Zwane has been our number one supporter since the first day and for that, we are endlessly grateful,” said Moeketsi.

“There are familiar faces each week, which proves consistency and community can build something powerful.”
Recently, EAO took a stand against GBV through their #StopGBV awareness campaign.
“We used our growing presence to remind the world that township youth are not just active, we are also conscious, courageous, and committed to change.
“The goal is to build a homegrown wellness brand that redefines how young people in townships view health, lifestyle, and success. Our only requirement is for everyone show up wearing all black and bring positive energy,” added Skosana.
The two confirmed they have gained support from runners in Vosloorus and KwaTsaduza, saying it was clear their movement is filling a gap that mainstream fitness culture has long ignored.

Their vision is to:• Find a home base: EAO is searching for a permanent clubhouse – a local restaurant or café for a pre- and post-run hangout, a planning space, and a cultural home for their growing tribe.
• Brand partnerships: From wellness gear to mentorship opportunities, EAO is ready to partner with brands that believe in purpose over profit and impact over influence.
• Expansion: With strong roots in their community, the club has ambitions to launch in other townships – always with the same grassroots authenticity. Their friend Zwane said EAO Run is a movement in every sense – physically, socially, and emotionally.
“It is about reclaiming space, rewriting narratives, and running toward a future shaped by youth, unity, and purpose. One stride at a time, one voice, and one community,” he said.

Another club member, Phindile Sibeko, said her friends encouraged her to join the club.
“When I joined, I struggled. I am not into fitness and found it hard to complete the run for the first time. I struggled with my breathing and experienced body pains, but the more I came and participated, the better I got.
“My body has adjusted and there is more than enough support among runners. I recommend joining the group to anyone that wants to stay fit,” she said.
Community members of Kwatsaduza and neighbouring townships are encouraged to join the EAO Run. For enquiries, contact Skosana at 069 534 7172.
