Tsakani’s Leratong Day Care serves 120 meals in second annual soup kitchen drive

Tsakani – The Leratong Day Care and Pre-School in Tsakani served 120 meals to disadvantaged households in the Rockville area on 8 June.
This marked the centre’s second annual soup kitchen drive, made possible through sponsorship from local Tsakani businesses.
The initiative aims to improve the livelihoods of residents in Kwatsaduza by providing much-needed support to the community.
Nanisi Mokhele, the centre manager and early childhood development (ECD) practitioner, explained the motivation behind the soup kitchen.
“Our main goal is to feed those in need during the cold winter months. Many families in our community, including parents of children attending our crèche, face high levels of unemployment,” she said.
Mokhele added, “We have identified families who truly need assistance, and we are committed to supporting them through this initiative.”

The soup kitchen provides both home-cooked meals and food parcels to those in need. This year, they distributed 112 food parcels and 50 sanitary towels.
Mokhele acknowledged that while they cannot assist everyone, reaching even a few families can have a meaningful impact on their lives.
“The Rockville community has been a strong supporter of the crèche since its establishment in 1992 by Dinah Mokhele. We have never experienced theft, burglaries, or any other problems because the community treats this place like their own. It is our time to give back,” said Mokhele.
Looking ahead, Leratong Day Care plans to make the soup kitchen an annual winter event. Mokhele expressed deep gratitude to the Tsakani businesses whose donations and sponsorships were instrumental in making the soup kitchen possible, emphasising that their support played a crucial role in the event’s success.
