Tsakani child receives life-changing R27 000 specialised wheelchair donation

Tsakani – EKFM, in partnership with Medop CC, secured a specialised wheelchair valued at R27 000 to provide vital mobility support for seven-year-old Mahlatse Masopoga. The wheelchair was donated on March 19.

Chris Kope, EKFM’s PR and marketing manager, explained that the station is often approached by community members seeking help with urgent needs.

A concerned resident brought Mahlatse’s situation to the station, highlighting the child’s physical challenges.

“She introduced us to the family, and we reached out to various organisations. Medop CC responded positively and opened their doors,” said Kope.

Reflecting on the donation, Kope described the experience as emotional yet fulfilling. “I know what it’s like to need assistance and how difficult it can be to access it.

“I feel a sense of purpose when I can help,” he said, thanking those who contributed and encouraging more organisations to support community-driven initiatives.

Quinta van Steijn, Medop CC’s orthotist and prosthetist liaison, explained that the specialised pediatric team assessed Mahlatse’s needs firsthand.

They selected a Glide Little wheelchair, designed specifically for children aged 10 to 14 inches, fully adjustable to grow with the child.

The chair is foldable for easy transport, with features including lateral supports, a tray table, armrests, footrests, and a tension-adjustable backrest to ensure stability, comfort, and postural support.

Mahlatse’s mother, Lebogang Masopoga, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the wheelchair. She highlighted the daily challenges of caring for a child who cannot perform basic tasks independently, including feeding and mobility.

“Having this wheelchair will make my life a little easier. It ensures his back is supported and allows us to move more freely, even on trips to Limpopo,” she said.

Lebogang also called on the community for additional support, including food, toiletries, employment, or permanent housing.

“Every contribution, whether big or small, will make a meaningful impact in our lives,” she concluded.
