John Barrable Hall in Benoni was filled with excitement as young athletes from across the country gathered for the SA National U9, U11 and U13 Badminton Championship over the weekend.
Among them were 13 determined athletes from Eyethu Badminton, some of them stepping onto the national stage for the very first time.
“And what a remarkable start they made. Dressed in their bright red and blue kits, these young athletes showed incredible courage and pride.
“They faced more experienced opponents without fear, playing with heart, focus and joy. Every match they played told a story of hope, hard work and the belief that they truly belong on this stage,” explained Samuel Mungala, the club’s director.
Six young girls, Keneiloe Motaung, Thatohatsi Mahlangu, Khwezi Twala, Omphile Motaung, Sinenhlanhla Vala and Lungelo Mashifane, proudly represented Eastern Gauteng Badminton in the team event.

Each brought her own spirit, determination and heart to the team, inspiring everyone who watched. In the individual events, Tshepiso Lebenya, Kutlwano Mofokeng, Boikokobetso Ledia, Kelebogile Msipha, Bohlale Mashinini, Asemahle Masilo and Boikanyo Letsapa gave it their all.
Boikanyo (U9) finished fourth in the national grading and reached the semi-finals in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Asemahle (U9) placed sixth nationally, showing great promise. In the U11 consolation event, Bohlale and Omphile battled hard and finished as runners-up.
“What’s important to remember is this. It wasn’t chance that took these children to this tournament. It was dedication, hard work and belief. Belief that no matter where they come from, they deserve this opportunity.

“Eyethu Badminton Development Academy stands for just that. We are not just about tournaments. We are about building a future where these kids can grow as athletes, leaders and role models for their communities,” said Mungala.
He added that none of this would have been possible without the dedication of the coaches, the unwavering support of the parents and the backing of Eastern Gauteng Badminton.
“We are deeply grateful to Transvaal Galvanizer, Imab Powers, JAE Engineering Pty Ltd, Ncane and Sons Holdings and the Eastern Gauteng Badminton Association for assisting with accommodation, entry fees and transport.
“Together, we can help these athletes reach new heights and build a future filled with opportunity,” he added.
Mungala shared his heartfelt thanks for the journey so far and his hope for what lies ahead. For more information about the club or how to contribute to their success, contact Mungala on 082 228 1792.
