Six distinctions pave the way for Ntokozo Maseko’s law dream

Tsakani- Ntokozo Maseko (20), a former learner at JE Malepe Secondary School, has proven that determination and hard work can change one’s circumstances. She obtained six distinctions in the 2025 matric examinations and is now working towards studying law at Wits University, where she plans to pursue an LLB degree.Ntokozo comes from an underprivileged background in Marikana, Tsakani. She said her motivation to succeed was driven by a desire to change her life and make a name for herself and her family. She achieved distinctions in IsiZulu home language, English first additional language, geography, tourism, history, and life orientation.Reflecting on her matric year, Ntokozo describes it as challenging but rewarding.“There were moments of exhaustion and pressure, but I remained focused on my goals. All the sleepless nights were worth it.

“I live in a very noisy environment with different events offering distractions. I managed to stay focused,” she said.“Discipline and consistency played a major role in my success.”To prepare for her final examinations, Maseko made use of past question papers, attended morning classes and examination camps, and ensured that she did self-study at all time.“I also attended extra classes, including weekend sessions, which helped me strengthen my understanding of difficult topics. Despite the challenges I faced throughout the year, I pushed through by staying committed and reminding herself why it was important to pass matric,” she cited.Ntokozo expressed deep gratitude for the support she received at home. She explained that during matric, she was relieved of household chores so that she could focus fully on her studies.

“That support made a big difference. It allowed me to give my books the attention they needed,” she said. She encouraged learners who did not pass matric to consider rewriting and to never give up on their dreams.“Failing does not mean the end. A second chance can change everything if you are willing to work for it,” she added. To learners who will be writing matric this year, Maseko urged them to study hard, maintain a positive attitude, listen to their educators and ask for help whenever they need it.Maseko said her decision to study law stems from her desire to change how people view the legal profession.“I hope that I will be able to use my qualification to make a meaningful difference in society and to advocate for fairness and justice, particularly for those from disadvantaged communities,” she said. Her journey stands as a powerful reminder that background does not define destiny.Through hard work, resilience, and the support of those around her, Maseko has shown that dreams are valid and achievable.
