Duduza – The LK Foundation has donated 120 pairs of school shoes to learners from Edalinceba Primary School, Duduza Primary School and Sibonisiwe Primary School as part of its annual Back-to-School Drive.
The donation took place on January 23 and marked the foundation’s third year running this initiative, which aims to support learners from disadvantaged backgrounds as they begin the academic year.
This year’s campaign was held under the theme “Walking into the year with confidence”, focusing on one of the most basic but essential learner needs – proper school footwear at primary school level.
“For the LK Foundation, school shoes represent far more than a material donation,” said Simisile Simelane, founder of the LK Foundation.
“They symbolise each child’s schooling journey, shaped by different circumstances, challenges and aspirations.”
“Through this drive, the foundation is not only supporting learners to attend school with dignity, but also affirming that their different journeys matter and deserve care and support,” she added.
The foundation’s work is rooted in a deeply personal story of perseverance and the power of support. While working in the United States of America as an au pair, Simelane received meaningful care and encouragement from her host grandmother, Laurance Kaplan, whose belief in her potential left a lasting impact.
In 2020, Kaplan gifted Simelane a monetary present on her birthday, a gesture that inspired the establishment of the LK Foundation, which was named in her honour.

This year’s Back-to-School Drive marked a significant milestone for the foundation, as it expanded its reach to two additional schools, Duduza Primary School and Sibonisiwe Primary School, reflecting its growing impact within the community.
“Beyond material support, we are building long-term learner support systems and developing initiatives that promote mental health awareness,” said Simelane.
“The foundation aims to positively impact learners’ overall school experience by addressing practical needs while also supporting emotional wellness.”
She concluded by acknowledging the role of partners and volunteers in making the initiative possible.
“This work would not be possible without the dedication and selfless contribution of our volunteers, as well as MNS Attorneys for their continued support. Their partnership allows us to walk this journey with more learners and create sustainable impact.”
