Duduza – Duduza SAPS has confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old mother following the death of her two-year-old son, who was allegedly poisoned.According to Duduza Social Crime Prevention coordinator and communications officer Nobuhle Mnisi, the police received a complaint from Pholosong Hospital after the child’s mother brought in the toddler.Mnisi said the mother alleged that she had given her son snacks that were laced with poison.“She also ate from the same packet of snacks in an attempt to commit suicide,” Mnisi explained.

While the mother survived and was admitted for medical treatment, the child later died.The two-year-old was laid to rest in November.Mnisi said that while the mother was receiving medical attention, Duduza SAPS detectives continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.On December 22, once the mother had fully recovered and was ready to be discharged from the hospital to go home for Christmas, detectives arrested her on a charge of murder.The mother appeared in court on December 24.Mnisi confirmed that she remains in custody and is awaiting assessment by a psychologist.She added that the court has added an additional charge of being an illegal immigrant, as she allegedly does not have legal documents to be in the country.
