Kwa-Thema — Moeketsi Hlajoe, better known as “Mo The Cook,” is a versatile composer, producer, and beatmaker who has carved out a name for himself in the local hip-hop scene.
He has collected accolades, including a win at the Ayish’Imic Battle Royale, a best male artist award, and a nomination for Best Lyricist at the 2018 Springs Hip-Hop Awards. Hlajoe’s rise reflects both talent and dedication.
He started writing songs when he was in Grade Five. Due to his upbringing, he initially started writing love songs.
“I grew up around a family obsessed with jazz, blues, and soul music but eventually fell in love with hip-hop. I used to hear my older brothers bump it, and the transition was quick and easy.
“I am part of a music-orientated family, literally. No family member is not into music or art. I believe I was not motivated to be an artist but I was born one,” said Hlajoe.

He mentioned that he does not look up to any industry artists but admires some of their work. He aspires to work with a few artists in the music scenes.
“I have produced for up-and-coming artists such as Vince Rappington and Main P, among others. Also written songs for various artists, but contractual obligations prevent me from sharing details about those collaborations.
“Internationally I would like to work with Euroz, Eric Bellinger, Chris Brown. In SA, I aspire to work with Manana, Ginger Trill, and Priddy Ugly.
Production credits include Hustlers Catalog for Gigg$ and Came Around My Way featuring Vince Rappington. A project that showcases Mo The Cook’s evolution from an up-and-coming artist to an established brand is currently in development.
Collaborative efforts are also underway with hip-hop artists such as D’zyNerd, Pegasus, and Tshepiso on an untitled project. A new track, Thembi Seete featuring D’zyNerd, is set for release in September.

“The track will be followed by an EP The Winged Stallion feat Pegasus composed and arranged by me. My mission is to capitalise and leave my mark through the talent that has been bestowed upon me. And I aim to inspire the ones who will follow into my footsteps to be as iconic as I am,” he said.
He said his music is not for everyone, especially those who are easily swayed by every trending sound.
“I make music for people who appreciate good music. My experience, encounters, and stories shared with me by individuals inspire his lyrics,” he mentioned.
Hlajoe has performed at various establishments, such as The Rize Tour, where he toured and performed across the region.
“I shared the stage with the likes of Scoop Makhathini, L’Tido, Sprite Uncontained, and Ginger Trill,” he said.
He aims to make music that resonates with listeners, inspiring them to get something from each track.
