The CoE announced the newly appointed MMCs, who were welcomed by Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, on February 18.
These appointments follow the death of the Roads and Transport MMC Andile Mngwevu in Mozambique in January.
Xhakaza had originally appointed Action SA’s Xolani Khumalo as the MMC of Community Safety, which party leader Herman Mashaba rejected.
In a statement, Mashaba said the party would not join Xhakaza’s failing government and had rejected every personal and formal approach made to them.
“Our position has been clear on every occasion that we will not lend credibility to an administration that has overseen the lawless and service delivery deterioration that continues to cripple the city,” said Mashaba.
The EFF also issued a statement, saying it had noted Xhakaza’s changes and that he had removed the party’s councillors from the Mayoral Committee.
Xhakaza removed Clrs Bridget Thusi as the MMC for Community Services and Kgopello Hollo as the MMC for Human Settlements.
The party said that those removals had followed the removal of Clr Nkululeko Dunga as the MMC of Finance in 2024.
According to the EFF, Xhakaza had offered the party’s councillors, Thembi Msane and Leshaka Manamela, the roles of MMCs for the Infrastructure and Economic Development Agency and Human Settlements, respectively.
The party said, “The EFF informs that we have declined the offer to form part of the Mayoral Committee in the CoE and will accept our role on the opposition benches.”
The newly appointed committee members and their portfolios:• Metro Utilities (Trading) Services: Clr Jean Sthato;• Metro Operations and Maintenance: Clr Nomadlozi Nkosi;• Human Settlements: Clr Leshaka Manamela;• Development Planning and Real Estate: Clr Dino Peterson;• Roads and Transport: Clr Lindiwe Mnguni;• Community Services and By-Law Enforcement: Clr Xolani Khumalo;• Community Safety: Clr Mzayifani Ngwenya;• Corporate Shared Services: Clr Siphumule Ntombela;• Infrastructure and Economic Development Agency: Clr Thembi Msane;• Finance and Strategy: Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi.
The city wishes the new committee success as they work to deliver efficient services and drive development.
