The Masifunde Sonke book club, in partnership with Afrika Mayibuye, the Gauteng Sport, Arts and Culture Department and the City of Ekurhuleni libraries, hosted a school debate competition of Grade 10 learners from five local schools on February 25.
The competition was held at the Kwa-Thema Library, where the club is based.
The schools included Phulong Secondary School, Zimisele Secondary School, Kenneth Masekela Secondary School, Nkumbulo Secondary School, and Tlakula Secondary School.
Speaking to the African Reporter at the competition, Nthabiseng Mochesane said that the club’s aim is to grow the competition, with more learners from various schools participating moving forward.

“With the schools participating in the competition, we will be opening book clubs there, so this is one of the ways we have built a relationship with the schools, and the participants are the ones who are facilitating the book clubs in their respective schools,” said Mochesane.
Mochesane added that the club aims to promote reading and show learners that it can be exciting.
The winning school from the competition was Zimisele Secondary School. Kenneth Masekela Secondary School took second place, and Tlakula Secondary School placed third.
The book club operates every Wednesday at 11:00 at the library.
