Masifunde Sonke awaits finalist announcement in Ekurhuleni slam poetry 2025

Masifunde Sonke Book Club recently auditioned for the Ekurhuleni Slam Poetry 2025 competition and is hoping to be selected to participate in the finals. Only five finalists will be chosen to compete in the event, which will be held in Germiston on December 12.
The competition forms part of the Our Language, Our Power programme, which also included online participation and monthly poetry contests.
The Ekurhuleni Slam Poetry 2025 initiative aims to provide a powerful creative platform for young and emerging poets to express their voices, challenge social issues and showcase their artistic talent.
The event celebrates spoken-word culture, encourages literacy and storytelling, and promotes youth development through the arts.

“So far, we do not know who has won yet. We are still waiting for a phone call announcing the finalists. The public is also invited to attend and support the competition,” said club leader and coordinator, Nthabiseng Mochesane.
“Slam poetry is a freestyle form of poetry. We are allowed to express ourselves freely through poetry. We want to build a strong reading culture and promote poets and writers.”
Mochesane added that they encourage the public to attend competitions organised by the municipality.
“There are a lot of opportunities. Last year’s winner, Solomzi Ntwenka from Masifunde Sonke Book Club, won a laptop,” she said.
