The first day of school can be a scary one for Grade One learners. This is made worse by having to say goodbye to your parents for the first time.
Here are some tips to help make the first day easier:
• The hug heartThe first day can be made a lot easier for a Grade One learner if they know their parents are thinking about them. To visually represent this, you can draw a heart on your hand and on theirs. Tell them that whenever they press the heart on their hand, you can feel their “hug”. This way they know you are always nearby.
•The family photoPut a family photo in your child’s school bag. This little token gives them something of their home to take with them to school. In this way, the new school class doesn’t feel quite as foreign.
• Share in the experienceWhen your child gets back from their first day, ask them about it. Every day at school is a new experience for a Grade One learner and they will want to share it all with you. Share in both the good points and the bad parts, as both of these are what helps shape your child.
