Local hospital celebrates International Nurses’ Day

The seminar room at Life Springs Parklands Hospital was humming with excitement as the institution celebrated International Nurses Day.
While embodying this year’s theme of ‘Our Nurses, Our Future’, the health professionals gathered as their superiors appreciated the hard work they put into their job. Cora Muller, the hospital’s manager, says nursing is not for the faint-hearted.
“Nurses are teachers, comedians, counsellors, patient advocates, and more. Today is about acknowledging that nursing is not just a profession but a calling.”
After a few light-hearted moments, Muller took on a more serious note and extended her gratitude towards her staff.
“Thank you for your dedication and excellence. We thank you for everything that you do.”
Zelda Munnik, a nurse at the hospital, presented awards to the nursing staff who performed well in their own capacity.

Student nurses Fusi Mokoena, Lebohang Maoto, Lehakwe Phokotjwe and Prince Motaung.

These nurses are Busi Nkosi from the surgical ICU, Nolothando Mphangane from the paediatric ICU and Anel Visser.
“Busi has demonstrated exceptional compassion and dedication to her patients. One of the standout examples of her kindness is when she went above and beyond to support a patient being transferred to a rehabilitation centre.
“Understanding the emotional and practical challenges faced by the patient, Busi purchased toiletries and sweet treats for him, ensuring he felt cared for and valued during his transition.”
Munnik added that this simple, thoughtful gesture made a significant difference in the patient’s experience, providing physical comfort and emotional support during a challenging time.
“Nolothando’s compassionate care is evident in the trust parents place in her care while attending to their commitments.

The nurses recite the nurse’s oath.

“Parents often request her specifically for their children, appreciating her detailed explanations of procedures and her ability to make both parents and children feel at ease.
“She quickly forms bonds with them, offering comfort and cheer, particularly those in the ICU for extended periods or who don’t receive many visitors.”
Munnik adds that Nolothando supports new agency nurses with unfamiliar equipment and technology. Anel Visser received the pace-setters award for 2025 for demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and taking the lead in setting the pace for transforming nursing into Life Health Care.
“She supports and advises students on extra help they might need, including technical proficiency in computer use.”
Those in attendance were led through the nurses’ pledge.
