Tsakani – Julia Nhleko is grateful for good health as she celebrated her 100th birthday on April 29.
Born and raised in the Free State, gogo Julia believes that life on the farms gave her the best foundation for a healthy life.
“We were very active and there was always something to do outside or in the house. I only came to the East Rand after I was married.” she said.
She has four daughters.
“I wanted a son, but I never had one, but I was very grateful when my daughters gave birth to boys. I feel like they are my sons now,” she added.
Gogo Julia said that she used to work as a domestic worker before she retired.
Julia Nhleko said she is not slowing down any day soon.
“I am a firm believer in good hygiene. I taught my children how to take care of themselves and our home. When I used to work, I would come back to a clean home each day,” she explained.
She said that even in her old age, one of the first things she does every morning is have a bath.
Gogo Julia said the best advice she can give to young people is never to compare yourself to anyone else and stay off the streets.
“Young people are always tempted to look at other people’s lives. That is not good. You can only be yourself. You can only do well if you focus on what you can do well. And if you stay home more you will stay out of trouble.
“You can visit people if they are sick, but you must leave before they get tired of you,” she said.
