Girls’ soccer takes centre stage with tournament

Tsakani – Phuthadichaba Community Foundation Ladies is inviting the community to participate in a girls’ soccer tournament from December 6 at Bohman Ground in Tsakani.
The tournament’s purpose is to provide a platform where young women can stay active, build confidence, and develop their athletic skills in a supportive environment.
The organiser and team coach, Sello Bottoman, believes that sport can be a powerful tool for empowerment, teamwork, and growth.
“The event is aimed at girls and young women who love soccer, their families who support youth sports, and community members who value positive recreational initiatives,” he said.
He mentioned that by focusing on these groups, he hopes to nurture a culture of inclusivity and empowerment around women’s sport.

Bottoman hopes this platform will create a space where female athletes are encouraged, supported, and recognised.
“The impact of the tournament goes beyond the competition itself. It gives girls equal opportunities to participate in sports, helping them express their talent, grow in confidence, and learn valuable life lessons.
“It strengthens community bonds and challenges the stereotype that soccer is a male-dominated space,” he added.
The tournament is open to a range of age divisions to compete among peers – from U10, U12, U14, U16 and the open women’s division.
“The goal is to keep the event fair, enjoyable and truly developmental.

“Eligibility is simple and inclusive. Players must fall within the invited age categories and register as part of a team or join a team formed for the tournament,” he said.
Bottoman urged individuals and businesses to provide financial support or any kind of sponsorship, such as awards, refreshments, soccer kits, and balls.
“Sponsorships are not treated as free advertising, but as meaningful contributions to youth development and social upliftment.”
Bottoman encourages the community and local businesses to get involved by donating goods or services, volunteering on event days or amplifying the tournament through their networks.
“Their support can ease logistics, motivate teams and help young players feel valued,” concluded Bottoman.
