Tambo Memorial Hospital recently hosted an insightful panel discussion on Career Mapping in the 21st Century to inspire junior doctors and nurses as they navigate their professional paths in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare environment.
Communication officer Zoliswa Nzeku said the session brought together senior professionals, who openly shared their personal journeys, challenges and triumphs.
The panel included Dr Matilda Mphahlele (dermatologist), Fikelephi Mbokazi (head of the psychology department) and Dr Nhlanhla Tshabalala (medical officer in the surgery department).
“Each panellist offered a unique perspective on career development. We wanted to create a space where junior staff could hear real stories from those who’ve walked the path before them,” said Nzeku.
Dr Zukiswa Mjamekwana, the head of the paediatric department, shared how she found her passion through experience.
Tambo Memorial’s panellists and junior staff mark the success of a day filled with career insights, mentorship and professional inspiration.
“I rotated through several departments, including gynaecology. It wasn’t always easy, but those experiences shaped me. Today, I am confident that paediatrics is where I truly belong.”
Mbokazi recounted the challenges of building the hospital’s psychology department from scratch.
“It took perseverance and grit. Psychology plays a critical role in patient care and guiding career development. Resilience and determination are key to success.”
The session also highlighted the importance of mentorship, innovation and specialisation.
Dr Tshabalala told junior staff: “To succeed today, you must find your niche, that unique passion or skill that distinguishes you from the rest.”
Creativity and forward-thinking were central themes of the discussion. Panellists encouraged young professionals to think beyond conventional methods.
“The world is changing, and so must we,” a speaker was quoted as saying. Traditional approaches alone are no longer enough. We need to think outside the box,” he said.
Tshabalala added a motivational note by reminding the attendees of the power of youthful ambition.
“Tap into your youth to reignite the fire within. When you feel lost or uncertain, return to the dreams you had as a young person. Often, that is where you will find your ultimate satisfaction and purpose.
“The road to success is rarely linear. But with the right mindset, support and vision, it is always possible.”
Dr Matilda Mphahlele, Dr Nhlanhla Tshabalala, Fikelephi Mbokazi and junior staff at the Tambo Memorial Hospital for an empowering panel on career mapping in the modern medical landscape.
