Community stalwart Buti David Mahlangu turns 102

Buti David Mahlangu marked his 102nd birthday surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, neighbours, community members and well-known locals on January 25.
His sister, Annah Masango, was also at the celebration co-ordinated by Dan Mahlangu and Siyanda Mahlangu.
Popularly known as ‘Handkerchief’, Mahlangu impressed guests by arriving without a walking stick or spectacles, and was left speechless after receiving messages of gratitude from his children.
Eddie Matsheni Maseko highlighted Mahlangu’s role as an active member of the Disciplinary Street committees, structures that later evolved into the CPF.
He said Mahlangu played a key role in community safety initiatives on Hlongwane, Khumalo and Mathebula streets.
The younger generation also had reason to celebrate, as the organisers had hired a jumping castle, ensuring a fun-filled day.
The guests enjoyed light meals and beverages as they celebrated. According to the centenarian, the secret to his long life is eating food without spices and limiting his salt and sugar intake.
