City of Ekurhuleni DEMS warns residents to be vigilant and prevent fires this festive season

With the festive season in full swing, residents are reminded to stay alert and practice safety to protect their homes and loved ones.
William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services ( DEMS), said the department appeals to residents to remain cautions and responsible when using any source of energy or heat during the festive period.
“The festive season is a time of joy, but it can quickly turn tragic if safety is ignored. We urge communities to take simple preventative measures such as unplugging appliances not in use, keeping candles on non-flammable surfaces, and never leaving open flames unattended.
“Most fires can be prevented by practicing vigilance and common sense. Every individual has a role to play in ensuring their safety and that of their neighbours.
“As families celebrate the summer festivities, the City encourages everyone to do their part in keeping their homes, neighbours, and communities safe from the devastating effects of fire,” he said.
Below are some of the most common causes of fires and how to prevent them:• Electrical hazards: Faulty wiring and unsafe electricity connections are among the leading causes of fires. In some communities, self-connections made by unqualified individuals pose a serious danger, as live wires run across streets without insulation. This puts residents, especially children, at high risk of electrocution. Overloading electrical outlets and using worn-out cables under carpets also increase the risk of fire. Always use qualified electricians for repairs and ensure electrical appliances are in good condition.
• Cooking and braai equipment:Braai areas and cooking appliances left unattended can quickly become dangerous. Homes with thatched roofs and lapas are particularly at risk, especially during strong winds. Never leave cooking pots unattended, as overheating can cause them to ignite. Faulty toasters, frying devices, and damaged cords should be replaced immediately.
• Candles and paraffin equipment:Power failures often lead residents to rely on candles and paraffin lamps. While useful, they can easily start fires if left unattended or placed near flammable materials such as curtains, or bedding. Always place candles in sturdy holders away from drafts, and extinguish them before leaving a room or going to sleep. Keep them out of reach of children and pets.
• Smoking in bed: Smoking indoors, especially in bed, is extremely dangerous. Falling asleep with a lit cigarette can easily ignite bedding and furniture. This risk is higher when one is under the influence of alcohol or feeling drowsy.
