City claims new trucks will improve waste removal

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has beefed up its waste removal fleet to improve service delivery. Five of the 10 waste compactor trucks and four bakkies were handed over to the Springs, Alberton and Boksburg waste services depots on Monday morning.
MMC Andile Mngwevu, responsible for Roads and Transport Planning Management, handed the new vehicles to Leshaka Manamela, MMC of Environmental Resources and Waste Management Services.
Mngwevu encouraged the officials who will be operating these vehicles to take care of them and, in this way, minimise breakdowns and provide consistent and reliable service delivery.
Manamela called on officials to prioritise their work and to have a proactive stance against illegal dumping. He expressed appreciation for the additional vehicles, saying they will assist supervisors in monitoring operations in real time.
Of the five new rear-end waste compactor trucks, three will be at the Springs depot and two will operate from the Alberton depot.

Two bakkies will support landfill sites with ground supervision and monitoring, and the Boksburg depot will use the other two for management and supervision.
The vehicles, that cost the city R38m have a three-year service plan, built-in tracking and telematics systems to monitor driver behaviour and fuel usage.
Refuse collection in the city faced significant delays in 2021. Kwa-Thema, Springs, Tsakani and Duduza were some of the hardest hit.
After an investigation into the causes of the delays, we discovered vehicles and employees at the Springs Depot were basking in the sun.
Some vehicles had expired licenses, while others had minor mechanical issues. At the time, the city justified hiring the services of private companies.
