Learners from three primary schools received new school uniforms through a recent community investment initiative by Alstom, aimed at supporting vulnerable households and strengthening access to education.
The 818 uniforms were distributed to learners at Alra Park Primary School and Happiness Primary School in Nigel, and Sibonisiwe Primary School in Duduza, which serve learners from grades R to seven. Many of the beneficiaries came from households dependent on social welfare grants.
The corporate social responsibility champion for Alstom South Africa, Zaibonisha Turkey, said the initiative formed part of the company’s broader commitment to education as a key pillar of its community investment programme.

“School uniforms, which play a vital role in a child’s sense of belonging, are often unaffordable, and we had to assist,” she said.
Learners expressed their appreciation for the support.
Lerato Banda from Alra Park Primary School said the donation had a meaningful impact on both learners and their families.
“Your donation has given our parents and us so much joy. Thank you for boosting our self-esteem and sense of belonging,” she said.

School principals welcomed the intervention, noting that access to proper uniforms helps promote equality in the classroom, improves learner confidence, and allows children to focus fully on their studies.
Alstom Ubunye CEO Thabiso Komako confirmed that more than R1m was invested in the initiative, describing it as part of the company’s long-term commitment to community development.
“A school uniform is not just a piece of clothing; it restores dignity, levels the playing field, and supports the development of our future leaders.
“We remain committed to creating a sustainable impact in the communities surrounding our operations,” he said.
