Mtaito’s Lifestyle wins charity soccer tournament

Tsakani – The third annual charity soccer tournament hosted by the Nkosinathi Mbonani Foundation lit up Tsakane Stadium on May 24.
The atmosphere was electric, with passionate spectators filling the stands and cheering from every corner. Emotions ran high as fans held onto hope for their favourite teams to claim victory.
Sixteen teams battled for top honours, with the first-place prize set at R12 000, of which R3 000 would be donated to charity.
The runners-up walked away with R2 000.
Local sponsors generously supported the charity games, including Mbonani Christian Funerals, Manjoh Foods, EKFM, Mnini’s Café, and Pablo Hiring.
Nkosinathi Mbonani established these charity games in 2023 with a vision to combat unemployment in the township by creating small jobs.

Mtaito’s Lifestyle won the final game with 4-2.

“The plan has always been to eradicate poverty by giving back to the community. Sport has a powerful way of bringing people together, uniting communities, and providing uplifting entertainment.
“The Nkosinathi Mbonani Foundation was established to meet people’s needs through soccer games and other small initiatives such as pad drives, soup kitchens, and donations,” said Mbonani.
He added that the foundation continues to grow as a beacon of hope for many, especially the youth, offering opportunities for empowerment, mentorship, and social change.
“Every initiative we take on is rooted in compassion and a desire to restore dignity and purpose in people’s lives. Our mission is to create a ripple effect of kindness, resilience, and transformation in under-resourced communities,” Mbonani explained.
He mentioned that seeing his charity games grow and make a difference in the lives of others is proof that he is on the right path.
The final game of the event was between Mtaito’s Lifestyle and Chicken Bar FC.

“My team played all their games very well. They participated like champions, although the game rules were bent at some point.
“The rules stated that individuals participating in any Easter games around the township may not play in this tournament. Unfortunately, our opponents were allowed to do so.
“I felt this was unfair. One of our players was removed from our team in the morning, but we complied because those were the rules. We hope this will never happen again. The game had to continue because it was already late,” said team coach Banele Msezane.
Msezane mentioned that, despite the hiccups encountered, the teams played a beautiful final game. He said they failed to capitalise on the opportunities that came their way in the first half.
“We were tired. Our first game was at eight in the morning, and having to play the last one at midnight was tough. Beyond everything else, I am proud of my team and applaud them for their participation, hard work, and dedication,” he said.
“I am also proud of Mbonani. I have been part of these charity games since he established them, and watching them grow each year has been a blessing.

“He does a lot for our township and keeps children off the streets. His contributions to the community do not go unnoticed.”

The game ended in a penalty shootout, with Mtaito’s Lifestyle securing a 4–2 victory. Their coach, Veli Msiza, said it was an intense game as the players were exhausted.
“We struggled with player availability and ended up playing the games with just 12 players. By the time we reached the final, we were beyond tired and feeling cold.
“The weather changed, and the last game started at 00:30. The first half was tight; our mission was to score and then defend the lead.
“We created opportunities but could not convert, as our opponents were prepared to defend,” Msiza explained.
Msiza mentioned they implemented a new strategy in the second half.
“We avoided excessive running in the second half and focused on passing the ball. I motivated my players and encouraged them to maintain their composure by reminding them we were playing for charity.

“Our biggest motivation was to help a charity in need. Winter is approaching, and the needs of destitute families are growing,” added Msiza.
The coach expressed his gratitude for winning the game, saying each match was worth the effort. He thanked the organisers for inviting his team to participate and expressed appreciation to their supporters.
“This win is exciting. We are grateful to have witnessed Mbonani doing good things in the community at such a young age. May he continue making a difference,” he concluded.
Mtaito’s Lifestyle chose to donate their charitable contribution to The Lord is My Provider, an NPO in Langaville Ext 7.
