Rising star blends kwaito, amapiano and kasi rap with big dreams

Kwa-Thema – At just 11 years old, Thato ‘Thato_HTE’ Shakwane is a musician who makes a combination of kwaito, amapiano and a fusion of kasi rap.
Shakwane gained inspiration and musical insight from his uncle, a music producer.
“My journey started at home in Kwa-Thema. I used to watch my uncles produce music for various people, and I liked what they did, so I started hanging around the studio more often to learn.
“I was largely motivated by the fact that I got to learn while doing what I loved – singing and dancing. And I have some of the best people to learn from,” said Shakwane.
He started making music with his uncle in the studio in 2021. He looks up to Rita and uBhuti Omdaia as artists in the industry who have made waves.
“The list of people I have worked with is growing. I have worked with Malum Parris Shaker, Abobhova, Sindisiwe Theia, Rich Dakhie, Kiing Mars, MK Ngcobo and DJ Njekzin. I hope to collaborate with Scotts Maphuma and LeeMckrazy.

“I am working on promoting a debut single, Dumelang, which is available on streaming platforms. My next single will be in honour of my birthday and will be an amapiano song,” he added.
His next release, Sekwenzenjani, is a vibrant song featuring DJ Njekzin and a surprise artist.
“My goal is to make and share good music while still learning. The mission is to inspire other kids to follow their dreams and explore their talents.
“My vision is clear – I would love to become one of SA’s biggest artists in the entertainment industry,” he said.
He added, “One of the interesting things about my journey is that I recorded my first song when I was only seven. And I can make different genres of music.”
He said his daily motivation comes from the will to unite people while making them happy.
“Having to spend much time with grown-ups, I have learnt the importance of respect and hard work. I have an opportunity to grow my skills at a young age. The aim is to have fun,” he concluded.
