Athletes from Kwa-Thema Disability Club break four SA records at 2025 National Championships

Athletes from the Kwa-Thema Disability Club broke four SA records at the 2025 Toyota South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled National Championships in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.
For the first time since the Covid-restricted games of 2021, the annual multi-coded games happened between March 29 and April 1.
One of the club’s star athletes, Siphesihle Mabena (15), who participated in the U17 category, scooped a gold medal in the javelin and a silver in the shot put.
“I also broke the record in my javelin throw, throwing 24.98m. It was my personal best. Before I went to Gqeberha, I could only throw as far as 20m,” he said.
Mabena said despite knowing he prepared well for the competition, he was pleasantly surprised by his results.

“I feel more inspired to win more competitions. I believe my body gets stronger with every challenge thrown my way,” he added.
Mabena hopes to participate in an international competition later this year. The club came home with seven gold medals and one silver.
Three of the team’s soccer players were chosen to play in the national team in Gqeberha.
“I am very proud of the athletes. I always believed that they can do well. I also appreciate the support we get from local businessmen Willy Msomi and Jabu Kubheka.
“The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has also helped us a lot,” said coach and founder of the club, Aubrey Mothibe.
