Tsakani – The Mavundla family is mourning the loss of their beloved son, Mvelo Mavundla (8), a Grade Three learner at New Mega Primary School.
Mvelo died Sunday morning after being hit by a car. His grandfather sent him to buy bread. The driver allegedly lost control of the car. He knocked over the child and the wall of a house.
His grandfather Gradine Mavundla said after noticing his grandson had been gone for quite some time, a boy stormed into their house asking where his grandson was.
“He asked me if I had sent Mvelo anywhere, mentioning a white car hit a child near the tuckshop and the child’s description matched my grandson’s. He said the child was stuck under the vehicle.
“I rushed to put on my shoes and ran to the scene. Upon arrival, I saw him lying at the side of the car, extracted from under it. The incident traumatised me,” he said.

Gardine was filled with emotion as he explained the loss of his grandson. He described him as a happy child who loved life and was forever playful.
He remembered Mvelo for having a warm heart, saying he was a respectful and well-behaved boy who brought joy into their lives. His untimely passing has left his family shattered and struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
“Everything happened so fast and nothing makes sense. If the driver could have swerved the car in the other direction, my grandson would still be alive.
“Mvelo was a bubbly child who was handy and helpful. We had an amazing bond; we were best friends. We helped each other with everything. I believe he was going to be a soccer star.

“He loved running and loved soccer. On the day of the incident, just before walking out to buy bread, he was on a call with his mother asking her to buy him soccer boots. He was passionate about everything he did. I will forever love and miss him,” added Gardine.
The family faces financial difficulties and appeals to the community for support.
“We have nothing at the moment. Receiving assistance will help us; groceries for the week will also keep us going. Any help the community can offer may make a significant difference,” he mentioned.
At the time of publication, police had not responded to The African Reporter’s enquiry.
