World Aids Day is celebrated annually on December 1 and this year’s theme was ‘Take the right path: My Health, My Right.’
The day serves as a reminder that every individual should remain steadfast in a commitment towards preventing new HIV infections while providing essential services and support to people living with HIV globally.
This year marked the 37th commemoration of World Aids Day. The first World Aids Day was celebrated in 1988 and served as a platform to raise awareness about HIV and Aids, and honoured those affected by the disease.
Former MMC for Health and Social Development Charlotte Zitha said people must advocate for health equity and ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare services.
“By doing that, we can end HIV as a public health threat by 2030 if everyone’s rights are protected. World Aids Day is a day to raise awareness about HIV/Aids.”
• Honour those who died from Aids-related illnesses• Show support for people living with HIV• Show support for people living with HIV• Celebrate victories, such as increased access to treatment and prevention services
“By taking the right path, we not only advocate for health equity but also empower communities to stand for their rights.
“Let us unite in our efforts to ensure that every young person and every individual living with HIV can proudly declare, ‘My Health, My Right.’
“The more clearly defined the enemy is, the more the chance of survival,” added Zitha.
