A 33-year-old man from Kwa-Thema has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Springs Magistrate’s Court for raping a minor in 2023.
According to police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, Mlungisi Nxumalo was arrested and eventually sentenced following a thorough investigation by Detective Warrant Officer Tebogo Lephoto of the Springs Family Violence, Child Protection Services and Sexual Offences Unit.
She explained that the incident occurred on June 17, 2023, when the victim was 13 years old.
“The victim reported to her mother that on her way home from her grandmother’s, she was approached by an unknown man, who grabbed her by the hand, took her to an unknown location where he raped her without using protection,” she said.
Sekgobela also said the victim was able to get the convict’s name from a phone call he answered while he was raping her.
“The victim said the person who called Nxumalo was asking for the suspect’s Facebook name, and that is where she got his name,” Sekgobela said.
The case was reported to the Kwa-Thema SAPS and assigned to Lephoto. The court found him guilty on March 3. The Ekurhuleni SAPS district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, has welcomed the conviction and applauds Lephoto for his dedication demonstrated in the investigation.
