WATCH: MEC Jacob Mamabolo calls for urgent road repairs and payment intervention during Ekurhuleni oversight visit

Duduza – Jacob Mamabolo, Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development, conducted an oversight visit in the Ekurhuleni Region on March 4, joined by ward councillors from the David Bopape Zonal Sub-Caucus representing Tsakani, Geluksdal, Duduza, Nigel and Alra Park.
The programme began in Duduza with a site inspection at the Spaarwater Dam road infrastructure, an area that has become a major concern for residents and motorists.
The road, which is in a deteriorating condition, reportedly leaves motorists stranded during heavy rainfall, disrupting daily commutes and posing significant safety risks.
“More rain is coming; my proposal is that we are going to write a formal letter to the mayor requesting them to immediately start planning a project in this area,” said Mamabolo.

“Because this needs proper planning, we need good engineers so they can provide a proposed solution. All we need is for them to start now,” he added.
Mamabolo expressed that engineers may also generate a temporary solution to the problem, saying the issues cannot just be left as is.
“While they come up with a sustainable long-term solution, a temporary one is also needed. We will say to the city, we need a long-term solution and an immediate, short-term solution because if we only look for a long-term solution, we will still face issues,” he explained.
Beyond infrastructure challenges, the site has also been flagged as a criminal hotspot. Disturbing reports indicate that criminal activities in the area have escalated, including incidents where victims were allegedly thrown into the nearby dam.

Mamabolo described the situation as urgent and called for immediate intervention to rehabilitate the road and restore safety.
“Infrastructure development must go hand-in-hand with ensuring the security of communities that rely on these routes daily,” he said.
The oversight visit then proceeded to Sizuzile Primary School in Tsakane, where the MEC inspected progress on a major education infrastructure project.
The development is expected to be completed by January 2028 and aims to significantly expand access to quality learning facilities in the growing community.

However, the project is currently facing setbacks. Sizuzile Primary School project manager, Takudzwa Kanda, raised serious concerns about the non-payment of subcontractors and workers – an issue that has led to the temporary suspension of construction.
“Time and again, contractors stop working due to not receiving their payments. Our main push is to complete this project next year, but there are a lot of challenges at hand,” he said.
Mamabolo stressed that urgent intervention is required to resolve payment disputes and ensure the project gets back on track to deliver improved learning facilities for the learners of Tsakane.
The visit formed part of ongoing oversight efforts to monitor infrastructure delivery and address service delivery challenges affecting communities across Ekurhuleni.
