Ratanang Elderly Organisation hosts vibrant beauty pageant for seniors in Kwa-Thema

Kwa-Thema – Elders and beneficiaries of different organisations participated in a vibrant beauty pageant organised by the Ratanang Elderly Organisation.
Elegance, confidence and joy filled Will Of God Ministries International Church on February 28. Elders aged 65 and above took to the stage, unleashing their full potential as models.
Ratanang Elderly Organisation was founded by Nomvula Sibanyoni and annually hosts the pageant on Valentine’s Day.
“This year came with a refreshing twist. We partnered with various local organisations from Kwa-Thema, Duduza and Daveyton.
“As organisers, we agreed that the winning organisation will take on the responsibility of hosting the contest next year under its own capacity,” explained Sibanyoni.
The initiative’s aim is to strengthen relationships between community organisations while expanding opportunities for the elderly.

Sibanyoni explained that the beauty contest is not merely about crowns and sashes, but about restoring dignity, confidence and joy among senior citizens.
“Our elders need to have fun, enjoy life and exercise. Socialising with their peers is equally important instead of making them feel like they need babysitting,” she said.
The event served as a fundraising platform to support beneficiaries’ needs. Sibanyoni mentioned that the funds raised will assist with essentials, such as knitting materials and other daily necessities for elderly members. The pageant winners walked away with practical prizes.
The second and third princesses received toiletries, including bath soap, bath salts, bubble bath, hand lotion, and perfume. The first princess was awarded a blanket.
“I acknowledge that there are areas that need to be improved, such as appointing professional judges in future, improving time management to avoid delays and adjusting prices of goods sold at events to better accommodate beneficiaries who may not be able to afford certain items.

“Looking ahead, I hope that our initiative will grow and expand to other provinces.
“As time goes on, we plan to also incorporate male beneficiaries in future contests and open participation to other elderly individuals, including church members and grandparents living independently who may not be registered beneficiaries,” she added.
Sibanyoni emphasised the need for sponsorship to further elevate the event. Support is required for decorations, catering, and resources to keep elders engaged, active, and entertained throughout the year.
“Our goal is to motivate and keep them occupied. Age should never stop anyone from celebrating life. I urge community members to allow elders to participate in different initiatives within the community,” she said.
“Everyone deserves to explore and have fun, old people included. I urge young people to introduce different activities and initiatives to old people. Take them out regularly and enable them to try new things rather than sitting at home doing nothing.”
Sibanyoni further invited individuals to form and participate in activities that they host yearly. For sponsorship and enquiries, contact Sibanyoni on 079 839 8592.
