In the recent SAPS statistics for the second quarter, Springs was ranked number 21 nationally and 19 in the province in the kidnapping category and number 11 nationally and nine in the province in the theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle category.
Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane told the African Reporter that the crime statistics are released to promote transparency and accountability. She added that they also assist police in identifying hotspots and deploying resources more effectively.
According to Zwane, more vehicle thefts happen in the vicinity of Far East Rand Hospital during visiting hours, as vehicles are often parked outside the hospital premises where there are no car guards. This creates opportunities for criminals to target unattended vehicles.
She confirmed that, at this stage, the investigations indicate that these crimes are not linked to an organised syndicate.
“As the SAPS, we advise that vehicle and motorcycle users must park in a well-lit, supervised area whenever possible. Avoid parking where there’s no security presence and where the suspects can hide,” she said.
Regarding the kidnapping statistics, Zwane shared that the majority of reported kidnapping cases in the area are linked to hijackings, where kidnapping is added as an additional charge. The common ones are either extortion or unrelated.
She noted that most hijackings occur at residential driveways between 18:00 and 21:00, when the victims arrive home.
To date, Zwane has confirmed that five arrests have been made, and the matters are currently before the court.
Together with the CPFs, she said the police have been conducting weekly crime-prevention operations. According to Zwane, these joint operations aim to address identified hotspots, increase police visibility, and strengthen community partnerships in the fight against crime.
She also said that the local police understand that the figures may create fear and uncertainty within the community and assured that the community’s safety remains their top priority.
Zwane said that police visibility has been increased in identified hotspot areas. Operations are underway, and collaboration with CPF and other stakeholders has been strengthened.
