Springs Girls’ High School hosted the league swimming gala on January 10, attended by swimmers from Pinnacle College Rynfield, Hoër Volkskool, Woodlands College, Alberton High School, and Springs Boys’ High School.
Springs Girls’ High School was fifth as a girls’ team and third overall together with Springs Boys’ High School.
Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, the Springs Girls’ High School swimming manager, Akira Vorster, said that the leagues are important for the schools that participate as these events prepare swimmers for the inter-high gala in March.
She said her teams had been preparing for the galas daily, with some days having training sessions in the morning and in the afternoon.

The school’s U14, U15, U16, and the open teams participated in the gala, with each team having boys and girls participants.
She expressed excitement for the school’s swimming team this year, as she said they had grown over the years. The swimmers always strived to do their best and beat their personal times in events.
“Our hopes and goals for the gala are that the swimmers enjoy the events, have fun and that they also beat their personal times for their events. We focus on improving times, as that means the swimmers are closer to achieving their goals,” she said.
Vorster also said that the coaches were satisfied with the girls’ performance during the gala. She shared that the visiting schools performed well, adding that the competition is always tight, but this is what drives the swimmers to develop and improve.

Vorster highlighted that the lessons the team would take to the next gala were good sportsmanship and always cheering for the other teams, despite where they placed.
The school’s swimming captain, Teboho Mokoena, said the event was wonderful and the swimmers did exceptionally well.
“The competition was fair, and it always makes the swimmers want to achieve better times. We hope to reach our full potential at inter-high,” concluded Mokoena.
The next league gala is on February 17 at Ashton International College.
