Kwa-Thema to host Fit 4 Free Aerobics Marathon promoting healthy living and community wellness

Kwa-Thema – The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni, is set to host the Ekurhuleni Fit 4 Free Aerobics Marathon at 07:00 on February 14.
The event will be held at the Kea-Athena Stadium to encourage healthier lifestyles and strengthen community unity through physical activity.
Sport promotion officer for the department, Kagiso Shongwe, said the event is a collaborative effort.
“The Ekurhuleni Fit 4 Free Aerobics Marathon is a partnership event between the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the City of Ekurhuleni,” said Shongwe.
Shongwe mentioned that the marathon was inspired by the Fit 4 Aerobics programme, a weekly three-hour aerobics session held every Saturday at different open spaces and facilities across the city.
He cited that the programme is free and open to anyone interested in improving their fitness.

“The Fit 4 Free Aerobics Marathon was conceptualised as a way of bringing together fitness enthusiasts who participate in the weekly programme into one venue for a fun-filled and intense aerobics session.
“The main aim of the event is to create awareness and promote a culture of healthy living among community members, particularly the youth,” he explained.
He further highlighted that the initiative also encourages participants to adopt regular exercise and healthy eating habits.
Shongwe cited that the event is designed to be inclusive and is open to people of all ages. The Ekurhuleni Fit 4 Free Aerobics Marathon has become an annual event hosted at different venues across the city.
“Last year’s edition took place in Tembisa, with several successful editions held previously. Organisers aim to continue growing the event in terms of participation and community impact.
“This year’s event will take place at Kwa-Thema Stadium, marking the first time the marathon is hosted in that part of the city,” he added.

According to Shongwe, the venue was selected to expand access and introduce aerobics to communities that may not have been exposed to such programmes.
Shongwe urged participants to expect an energetic and entertaining programme featuring sessions such as Zumba, Kata Box, Hi-Lo, and Step aerobics.
“Exercise and healthy diets have been proven to reduce health risks such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
“This event also creates a space where community members can connect and support each other,” he said.
The long-term vision of the Fit 4 Free initiative is to establish a sustainable culture of fitness and physical activity while reinforcing the message that maintaining a healthy lifestyle does not always require financial resources.
Shongwe encouraged residents to attend and participate in the marathon. For more information and enquiries, contact Shongwe on 071 853 3587.
