Inkanyezi Performing Arts Institution, founded by Lucky Sebatana, made history on December 13 by staging its Street Life production at the Springs Civic Theatre for the first time.
The production was directed and produced by Lucky ‘Dumpie’ Sebatana.
“I wrote the story drawing from my experience. In 2023, I suffered a stroke as I was preparing to tour with The Lion King overseas,” he explained.
He said his life changed in an instant, and he was devastated.
“It was during that period that I started speaking to others who were experiencing unfavourable circumstances. That is when I realised that there are a lot of people who are struggling with circumstances beyond their own control,” he explained.
Sebatana wrote the play Street Life.

The performance represented a significant breakthrough for the Kwa-Thema-based institution, particularly as the majority of the cast were children and youth aged 10 to 19, alongside adult performers. The show highlighted the depth of raw talent emerging from township communities.
Adding prestige to the occasion was the presence of renowned actor Glen Gabela, best known for his role as the teenage Shaka in the internationally acclaimed Shaka Zulu, as well as his appearances in popular television productions such as uZalo.
Sebatana, who was part of the Shaka iLembe Season 1 production, said personal adversity shaped the journey to establishing Inkanyezi Performing Arts Institution.
Through Inkanyezi, children are not only taught acting and performance skills but also exposed to life skills, character development, and discipline, with the aim of shaping responsible citizens and future leaders.
“For every well-known star, there were humble beginnings. These children are the stars of tomorrow,” said Sebatana.
