Track star from Hoërskool Hugenote targets personal bests after injury comeback

When thrower Hoërskool Hugenote learner, Amorè Steyn launched her shot put and discus at her first club outing of the season during the opening CGA open track and field league meeting at Germiston Stadium on January 31, she did so with the unmistakable intent of an athlete ready for the big stage.
Her loud, echoing shouts from the throwing pits told their own story – a surge of confidence and belief in a successful comeback season after torn ankle ligaments abruptly brought her 2025 campaign to a premature end.
The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) has one goal in mind this season, and it’s “to perform the best I can to beat my personal best and to praise the Lord while doing it”.
The thrower had improved her PB to 14.10m in the shot put and boasted a 38.17m PB, set at last year’s Wildeklawer TUT Top 14 in Pretoria, in the discus before her injury.
Despite lingering doubts due to some sensitivity in her ankle, Steyn, a Grade 10 learner at Hoërskool Hugenote, feels she’s in shape to surpass her shot put mark after opening her provincial season with 13.51 for second place in the U18 girls’ shot put.

Boksburg Athletic Club’s Amorè Steyn competes in the discus and shot put.

In the discus, she was also not far from her PB after launching the implement to 38m, good for the runner-up spot in her category.
“The injury was really frustrating. It took me a long time to get back into it and to feel confident to know I can do it again without injuring myself further. It was a long process, but I think I’m there.
“I stress a bit every time I throw. It’s the instinct that came after the injury. But it felt good. I love my sport and it felt good to throw again,” she said.
Though the 15-year-old admitted she’s still on the mend and not yet at her best, she has set her sights on qualifying for the ASA U16, U18, U20 and U23 championships to be held at Germiston Stadium next month.
“I would love to represent my province at the nationals. The goal is definitely to qualify for the champs,” Steyn said.
