Tsakani – Access to basic school necessities is critical to restoring dignity and improving learner confidence, especially those from disadvantaged communities.
Recognising this need, the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) Ward 85 recently initiated a Back-to-School Campaign to support learners facing daily challenges to access school footwear.
“During the first week of January, Sanco Ward 85 approached an owner of a cellphone repair shop in Malandela to request support for the campaign through donated school shoes.
“The owner responded positively and donated nine pairs,” said Lucas Komane, the chairperson of Sanco Ward 85.

Following this contribution, Sance Ward 85 identified three schools to benefit from the donation – Khombindlela, Letsie and Nchabeleng primary schools.
“Each school received three pairs of shoes. To ensure they were suitable for the learners, teachers provided the correct shoe sizes ahead of the handover,” he said.
The donation was presented at the schools, with school management and school governing body members present.

“Many learners who benefited from the campaign walk long distances from their homes to school and back, often wearing worn-out shoes.
“In some cases, learners had experienced bullying and teasing, which affected their confidence and school experience,” added Komane.
Komane said the impact of the donation was immediately visible. Learners who received the shoes showed improved confidence and self-esteem, and were thankful.
“Teachers and parents welcomed the initiative and were pleased to see learners start the academic year with renewed confidence and dignity.”
