WATCH: Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu’s body returned home ahead of funeral



The body of the City of Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Transport and Infrastructure, Andile Mngwevu, was repatriated to the country on February 1 with funeral arrangements currently underway.
Mngwevu, a Springs resident, was reported missing after the car he was travelling in was swept away by the floodwaters in Chókwè, Mozambique.
The office of Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza confirmed Mgwevu’s death on January 28 following a lengthy search.

Mngwevu was one of five people who had been travelling in the vehicle at the time. One passenger escaped and survived.
The remains of fellow passengers, Scelo Shongwe, Ntokozo Hlophe, and Sfiso Neo Mamonyane have also been returned to the country.
Mngwevu served as the deputy chief whip of the ANC Caucus in Ekurhuleni. On February 1 and 2, ANC leadership visited the families of the deceased to offer their condolences.

The chief whip, Ald Sizakele Masuku said, “Mngwevu was one of the comrades who provided a sharp leadership. There is a huge void that has been left by his absence and we are asking ourselves who is going to fill that void in our hearts, mind and in the space of leadership.”
After visiting the family, Masuku shared her empathy with the family describing the loss of a loved one as devastating and confusing.
“It happens to each family that goes through it, its painful. The nation is mourning comrade Andile because he has been an instrumental element in the life of politics,” she said.

The regional secretary of the ANC in Ekurhuleni and the city’s finance MMC, Jongizizwe Dlabathi confirmed that Mngwevu’s memorial service will be held on February 5 and the funeral on February 7.
He added that the times and venues are yet to be confirmed. He added that the Shongwe, and Hlophe will also be laid to rest on Saturday and Mamonyane on Friday.
“Further details will be shared with members of the media. We have a funeral committee that is working hard to coordinate all these events in conjunction with the families,” he said.

Following the news of the remains being found, Xhaza expressed sadness at Mngwevu’s death, who was also the leader of government business in the city.
“Mngwevu was a committed public servant who dedicated his life to improving mobility, infrastructure development and service delivery for the people he served. His passing is a profound loss to the city, the council and the community,” Xhakaza said.
He said Mngwevu, a critical member of the mayoral committee, paid close attention to detail and ensured the protection of the community’s interests.

“On behalf of the city’s leadership, the mayor extends condolences to the Mngwevu family, friends, colleagues and those affected by this tragic loss.
“We stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time and mourn the loss of a leader whose contribution to public service will forever be remembered,” he said.
Xhakaza also conveyed condolences to the Hlophe, Shongwe and Mamonyane families.
