Tsakani – Like many South Africans who chose entrepreneurship during the height of unemployment, Mandla Jamela’s story is a journey that a number of youths in the country can relate to.
Born and raised in Tsakani, Jamela has always had a passion for craftsmanship, creativity and problem-solving – a hobby that would see him taking on carpentry as a full-time career.
Jamela currently holds a National Diploma in Operations Management from the University of Johannesburg and a certificate in furniture making, the latter being a course he discovered whilst experimenting with woodwork at his home.
“Despite holding a formal qualification, I made a conscious decision to give carpentry a solid five-year run.
“At the time, I was young enough to take the risk, as I had fewer responsibilities at the time. As the years progressed, the decision to evolve from my craft being a hobby to a career stemmed from the support of my family and friends,” said Jamela.
His furniture studio specialises in bespoke, custom-made woodwork and furniture, with every item designed to each client’s specifications and needs.

As a small business competing with other retail giants, Jamela prides itself in consistency and building something meaningful from the ground up; understanding how materials come together and how effort, patience and precision translate into something tangible.
“I never would have imagined that I would take this route in life, but life is not linear after all. I hope that my journey resonates with someone, especially with the employment sector currently being oversaturated.
“Do not be afraid to jump out of your comfort zone, a new world waits ahead of you. Do not wait for the opportunity, build it! You do not need to have it all figured out.
“Use what you have, learn as you go and do not underestimate the power of motivating yourself every day.
“The job market is oversaturated, and the reality is that you may have to create your own path. Try to better yourself and you will see the results,” added Jamela.
