Amapiano community mourns rising star killed in Duduza robbery



Duduza- The amapiano music community is mourning the death of Kamogelo Mokoena (20), an up-and-coming artist whose life was cut short during a robbery and attempted robbery on January 13.At the time of the incident, Kamogelo was reportedly walking with a friend from Lucky’s Place in Bluegum View to the Basotho section.According to his aunt, Matseko Mokoena, Kamogelo and the friend were confronted by unknown men. During the incident, the two were separated.The friend was allegedly assaulted, while Kamogelo was stabbed in the chest, sustaining fatal injuries.“According to us, the intention of the incident was to rob them of their belongings,” said Matseko.She was informed of the incident at around 07:00. When she arrived at the scene, she was told that Kamogelo’s body had already been removed.

“His brother and father were the first to arrive at the scene to identify his body.“In search of answers, we went to the police station as a family.“At the police station, they informed us that Kamogelo had passed away as a result of the injuries he sustained,” she said.His family described Kamogelo as a humble, passionate, and talented young man who had a deep love for music.“He was determined to build a future for himself through music and was steadily working towards making a name in the industry.“He was forever making music. Every time we called him, he was either surrounded by music or was in the studio making music.“Kamogelo was not a troublesome individual, but rather a helpful person. We will miss him for his kindness,” said Matseko.His untimely death has left his family, friends, and supporters devastated and has again highlighted concerns about violent crime affecting young people in the country.Kamogelo was laid to rest on January 18.Matseko said the family is seeking justice for their loved one, adding that the suspects deserve a heavy sentence.The Last Battalion Anti-Crime Unit spokesperson, Lindamkhonto Ndimande, confirmed his team apprehended the suspects and handed them over to the Duduza SAPS.“On January 13, another individual was stabbed and rushed to the hospital after sustaining internal bleeding.“The incident was reported to us, and we immediately followed it up.“The victim knew one suspect, who our team subsequently visited. As a result, he could identify the other three suspects involved,” said Ndimande.“The four men were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and sexual harassment.”The men appeared before the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on January 16 and were denied bail.The matter was postponed until February 2.Ndimande urged community members to support the family during the court dates.“I thank community members for working with us, and for reporting issues to us on time.Ndimande thanked his team for working swiftly and tirelessly.The Duduza SAPS had not responded at the time of publication.
