Kwa-Thema- Lebohang Bangani’s journey in netball is one rooted in passion, growth, and a deep commitment to empowering young girls through sport. Her love for netball began at a young age, sparked by school competitions and the sense of belonging the sport offered.“What first drew me was not only the excitement of the game, but the teamwork, discipline, and confidence it instilled.“Netball quickly became more than just a sport for me; it became a space where I could express herself, learn resilience, and build lifelong values,” she explained.Transitioning from player to coach was a natural progression for her. Lebohang found herself increasingly drawn to guiding, mentoring, and supporting others.“While playing allowed me to shine individually, coaching gave me the opportunity to impact many lives at once. Establishing myself as a coach was not without challenges.“I have had to earn trust, continuously learn the technical and tactical aspects of the game, and prove myself in environments that demanded consistency and results,” she added.“Through perseverance, self-belief, and a willingness to grow, I carved out my space in the sport. Along the way, I faced obstacles such as limited resources, self-doubt, and the pressure of expectations.”She overcame these by leaning on discipline, seeking mentorship and reminding herself why she started.

Her coaching style is grounded in empathy, structure, and accountability. She believes in developing confident players who understand the game, respect themselves and support one another.“Winning is important to me, but growth, character, and wellbeing matter just as much,’ she said.Netball has taught Bangani valuable lessons about leadership and life.“I have learned the importance of communication, patience and leading by example. One of the most memorable moments in my coaching career was witnessing my team overcome adversity and believe in themselves when the odds were against them,” she cited.Bangani cited that those moments reaffirm her purpose as a coach.Among Bangani’s proudest achievements is seeing players grow not only in skill, but in confidence and self-worth.Balancing competition with player development and well-being is central to her philosophy.“I prioritise mental strength, physical health, and personal growth. A well-supported player performs better on and off the court. One of the most impactful experiences in my journey has been mentoring a player who doubted herself but, through consistent support and belief, grew into a confident and capable athlete,” she mentioned.Bangani firmly believes that netball plays a powerful role in empowering young women and girls.“It teaches confidence, leadership, and independence while offering a positive outlet and a sense of community. Coaching has changed me into a more patient, compassionate, and purposeful person, constantly reminding me of the responsibility she holds as a role model,” Bangani said.To young girls who aspire to play or coach netball, her advice is simple.“Believe in yourself, stay disciplined, and never be afraid to start small. Passion and consistency will open doors,” she concluded.
