Kwa-Thema – Lungelo Mdlalose (31) is using his voice in sports to transform communities and inspire the next generation of sports commentators in SA.
“I can’t explain it, but it is in my blood to be a commentator. It is where I feel alive, and I know people love to hear from me,” he said.
‘Shakazulu’, as he is affectionately known, decided to make his commentating journey official after injuries cut short his career as a player.
Shaka fell in love with soccer, like many SA boys, in primary school in KZN. That is also where he started to commentate.
Encouraged by teachers who saw his gift early on, and supported by his mother, he grew into a commentator whose presence brings sports to life not only on the field, but also in the hearts of the communities he serves.
“Our work is important because we give people information as they enjoy the game. We research players and teams, and pull out details that we want to share with the fans,” he explained.
Shaka relocated to Kwatsaduza in 2009 and attended Nkumbulo Secondary School. He continues to prove that the microphone is more than just a tool for entertainment; it is an instrument of change.
Today, Shaka is an example of how sports commentary can extend beyond match analysis. His biggest achievement was commentating for Nomndayi Community Games. He uplifts township youth, sparks meaningful conversations, and drives initiatives aimed at social progress.
“Now, I use it to remind young people that they, too, have a voice and that voice can change their lives and the world around them.
“This has given me access to some of my heroes. I have met influential people, who helped to propel me even further,” he added.
He said his mission is to empower young people to find their voices and use their talents to create positive change.
