Kwa-Thema – Two cricketers from the Kwa-Thema Cricket Club ladies’ team are making waves in the sport after being selected to represent the Eastern Storm ladies’ side in the Senior Division 2 fixtures.
Siphokuhle Masilela (16) and Thando Zulu (20), both products of the local cricket development system, received the call-up to participate in the T20 and 50-over clashes against Mpumalanga on November 8 and 9 at St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview.
“Their achievement is a proud moment not only for their club, but for the Kwa-Thema community,’ said the club secretary Thami Mathibe.
The pair is determined to shatter the long-standing stereotype that girls in township communities should stick to traditional sports, such as netball.
“Instead, they are carving their own path in cricket, a space where they hope to inspire other young girls to follow. Both players have set their sights on even bigger dreams.
“Their ultimate goal is to represent SA as part of the Proteas women’s team at the next World Cup, and one day become international cricket stars emerging from the humble streets of Kwa-Thema,” added Mathibe.
The club is proud of the duo’s progress and believes their journey will motivate many more girls in the township to pick up a bat and pursue the sport.
