Kwa-Thema – Busisiwe Mahlangu (20) has been selected to represent Ekurhuleni at the National Netball Championships in September. Busi, as she is affectionately known, is living the dream she nearly gave up on.
“I went through the trials for the U19 squad before, and I made it through the two rounds. But for some reason, when it was time to play, I did not make the team,” she explained.
She said the whole experience made her doubt her skills.
“But when the opportunity to try out for the U21 team came up this year, I was inspired to give it another shot,” she added.
Busi, who plays for Wings Netball Club, believes that playing the sport keeps her away from destructive behaviour.

“I started playing netball when I was in Grade Five at Masimini Primary School. Unfortunately, when I got to high school, there was no netball team, so that is when I decided to play in the local leagues.
“The sport has taught me discipline, and it has also helped to build my confidence. It has been a great experience to discover that I am good at something.
“It is also therapeutic because no matter how bad my day is going, when I get to the netball court, I forget about everything and focus on playing the ball,” she explained.”
The goalkeeper and defence player said making the squad has been both exciting and nerve-racking.

“I know that the competition will be tough, but I believe that I have what it takes to help my team win. I hope to gain some experience that I will come back and impart to my teammates,” she added.
Following her selection, Busi is expected to contribute R7 500 to the regional team to secure her kit. She also does not have the appropriate shoes for the courts.
“I would appreciate any kind of contribution to help me as I get ready for this milestone. One day I hope to play in the national team,” she said.
Anyone who wishes to support Busi may contact her coach, Mduduzi Duze, on 063 107 5234.
